Nicola Cairncross, the very clever lady

by admin

…and a very nice interview to boot…..

Introducing Nicola Cairncross, who is going to be a regular on our show, and I am very excited about it. She is an author, speaker, wealth coach, and business mentor (inner and outer game).

She rocks.

She was mentored by Gill Fielding (remember Secret millionaire), so a very good heritage here. I like to bring you only the best of course!

I have been aware of her work for a while actually, I bought her book “The Money Gym”, a few years back, which is a complete and concise financial education (and WHY don’t we get taught this at school!!), from the different ways to make money over and above your job, cash flow management, and the all important beliefs and mindset.

In the light of the financial situation right now, she has re written it, and I am excited to pore over it again. I asked the question “Is it still possible to do well now”, and she answered “Yes…” Now that’s the kind of inspiration I want to hear. Don’t you?

And she walks her talk, she mastered these skills while being at home with her 2 young children.

I thought she was very cool, and I am sure you will too- have a listen.

Do leave questions for her on the blog comments, what do you want to know.

Getting the attention of the press

by admin

Had a chat with my most excellent colleague Kristiaan Yeo today at work, all about grabbing press attention.

He talked, I listened, and I made notes, and here’s what was said.

My questions are in ordinary font, his answers are in bold, this is not a word for word transcript, but the gist is there.

How does one grab the attention of someone in media, and have a good chance of promotion- I have seen you “bust” people who just want a free plug for a commercial venture- how does one respect the journo and still get what they want?

Journalists see LOTS of facts and figures, so it needs to be something attention grabbing, not everyday. Think about it, what would get your attention more- “50% of people have phobias”, or “50% of people are scared of kittens”, now that’s got much more chance of getting noticed.

You need to get really clear on WHAT you are offering and to who. In the sector (niche) you are in, who are you aiming at? What are their desires/problems? It’s a case really of market research, and once you know your audience more, you can create something that really speaks to them. And get the data right, from a survey or however you do it, and make it interesting data.  As I said, journos see a LOT of data, so more than just everyday stuff needs to be presented to them.

That makes sense really, in a trade publication you can really niche down and be specific can’t you. I guess its the old system, find a problem and solve it, and you will not really have to do much selling. If you are trying to sell a bald man a hairbrush, I guess it does not matter how good your press release is!

Kris by the way, has a skill for writing copy that will be read by journos, and has a main database (a way of sending to all the nationals), and smaller databases that are more niche specific, and can be hired privately to put something together for you. You would not need to write anything or source where to send it- all done for you. And since you are my subscriber, I can get a good deal for you.

I am also aware of software that creates a podcast,  and a press release, video and articles all in one as well, if that would be of interest to you.

Baxter Basics

by admin

Anyone else remember the John Major quote, or if you are a reader of the alternative magazine Viz, the politician of the aforementioned name (caught doing something unspeakable with a petrol pump), but it’s not passed the watershed yet so ’nuff about that.

No, I am talking about the very basics of internet marketing, and I have been watching webinars recently- this one from Pat O’ Brian as a prequel to his Unseminar 8. One day I will attend one of those, they sound so cool, he says this will be the last one but I hope not. As someone that loves networking they sound so cool and laid back.

Anyway, just watched a seminar from Erica Douglass and I present a condensed version below, comments welcome please.

First, you need a couple of tools, google keyword tool is the first one, just google, google keyword tool and grab that one.

Then we begin the process of keyword research, I personally have a subscription to nichebot and keyword elite, but if you do not, no worries, then you can just type in the base keyword. Then see how many monthly searches it gets- to be worthwhile, then it needs to be at least 10000 a month.

Then you need to know what the people are thinking when they type the words in- a rather clever tool called commercial intent, meaning a probability estimate on the intention of people to buy something, rather than just looking for information. Depending on what you discover here, it will depend on what kind of site you set up.

Then, to double check, look on Amazon to see what is selling there, and if it has a good price tag, then you know that there is money in that market. Check paid ads on google as well, they would not be advertising if they were not making money. In this sense, others have done the research for you :)

Don’t forget to have fun in business as well, many people are deadly serious, but there are folks who, in the recession are making 5 figures writing i-phone apps, that are fun.

So, when it comes to niche research, think big, then narrow down, do what you do in your own unique way, even if you are not doing anything radically diferent from anyone in the market, then just doing it in a unique way can be the difference that makes the difference.

It can be a beneficial (if a little painful) exercise to buy compeditors products- a lot of them are not very good, and you can fine tune your product. Another great idea was to take 5 people- yes, your customers out to lunch, and let them do 90% of the talking, learn their problems and wants, that you can find solutions for or fulfill.  Visit forums where they hang out. Learn the lingo. As a radio presenter I have a whole vocabulary from my industry, I will teach you if you like!

You do not have to be an expert, to use our above example, you do not need to be a top DJ to enter the radio market.

You do need passion however. And traffic.

And more about that soon.

Robert Puddy Seminar

by admin

So, over the weekend I had the pleasure of meeting some of my internet marketing friends and colleagues at a rather good seminar put on by Robert Puddy and his business partner , Donna Fox.

It was rather star studded in internet marketing circles, Ambar Hamid, Simon Leong (who used to work at google, Jonny Andrews, Omar Martin, Sterling Valentine, Martin Avis….

Lots of great content was shared, many good offers were made, me, I can be like a kid in a candy store at places like this, ooooh, i want that, and that… fortunately my card did not take too much of a battering.

Well, not too much:)

Incase you missed the seminar, I have created a 30 minute podcast of the event,

My journalistic instincts took over, and I could not resist grabbing some of the participants and getting them to spill some of their best stuff, and it is available here- free of course. I can only give you a taster here of course, but if you need more information i can point you in the right direction.

It seems that most, if not all people face the same problems online, and that in a way is good to know, what else was good was that the speakers at the seminar were sensitive to that as well, I felt that we were “understood” as well as being sold to.., and the speakers were excellent as well.

Click here for the seminar experience- on podcast!

This lifestyle

by admin

I like the blogging life, I mean, just chatting about life and stuff, and listening to Jack Humphrey from Blog Success, interview Heather Armstrong, and I am learning more and more, and I realise it is not so different to radio in the sense of relateability, people want to know about your life, what is going on, even day to day stuff.

How deep do you let them in? Good question- I guess what we are comfortable with really, but some bloggers go deep, really deep, perhaps this conterbalances some of the shallowness we see every day- dunno.

Bet cyberstalking wont be long either.

By the way, having a stalker is not fun, I had one once, when I was working at Capital- her name was Gema, and yes, that is spelled correctly, and she spelled my name Nill.

"Dear Nill"

I am moving closer to be with you, our baby is due in March.

Wha…. I was drunk, it meant nothing. Seriously though, I had never met her- I know I am impressive girls, but that would be a feat!

So the letters continued until I had built up a collection of about 30, and I decided to get my secretary to do something about it. Well ok, it was my mum, but she didn’t know that.

So, I got one of my promotional photocards, and got my mum to type on the back something along the lines of… "Neil does not answer any of his own mail", which of course was not true, but it did the trick.

For a week.

Then the letters started again, declaring undying love for me, and our immaculately concieved baby.

Then she turned up at a nightclub gig I was doing.

It could have been something out of a Steven King movie. Nightclub. Rainy night. She was standing outside in the rain, looking bedraggled and miserable, staring.

So, like a fool, I said to the doorman, who I got on really well with- Let her in.

Mistake.

I was there with my girlfriend at the time, and she came up to her at her table, slammed her drink down on the table and said "You’re with my boyfriend you bitch!"

AND I GOT TOLD OFF BY MY GIRLFRIEND! GET THAT! WOMEN!

Oh, and stalkers never look like hot models. Ever. Not ever. Shame, but just the way it is. Still you cant have it all.

But anyway, being paid for chatting about life, and being able to spend more time with my favourite people, that’s a price worth paying for the odd stalker.

And by the way Gema, I’m just not into you. Sorry.

Lots of Love

Nill
